MAT6294   Transformative Technologies   (10 credits)

Year Running: 2017/2018
Credit level: F7
Additional Information   Yes: this unit is specific to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (UoS). This unit requires significant background knowledge in many areas.

Description

The metals industry is going through a revolution at the moment. Many technologies are in development which could lead to a significant change in how we manufacture or use metals. Examples include near-net shaping using direct metal deposition producing products without casting or forging, or hybrid materials where metals and polymer based composites are used in one system. The objective of this module is to undertake group case studies based on topical emerging technologies and analyse the underlying scientific and engineering principles as well as their potential to disrupt the market. In addition, a short exercise on information sourcing of potentially disruptive technologies will be undertaken.
